New Zealand's Threats & impacts.   In the past 800 years, humans and accompanying pests have eliminated 32 percent of the indigenous land and freshwater birds, 18 percent of seabirds, 1 of 29 species of freshwater fish, 3 of 7 frogs, perhaps 3 of 64 reptiles, 1 of the 3 bats, possibly 11 of about 2300 higher plants, and at least 12 invertebrates such as snails and insects.

Terra Nature Fund a California nonprofit corporation based in San Francisco, is working to conserve land, protect native birds and other endangered fauna, and restore habitat in New Zealand. This provides New Zealanders living in the United States, who are interested in supporting the environment at home, with the opportunity to make tax-deductible donations.

The Matakohe Kauri Museum.
The kauri tree, Agathis australis, is a type of conifer or pine tree which is unique to the subtropical northern part of the North Island. Tane Mahuta is approximately 1250years old, 4.4 metres in diameter and it's first branch is 17.7 metres from the ground.

There are 4 native New Zealand species of the genus Fuchsia that occur elsewhere only in Latin America (+120 species) and Tahiti (1 species).   Fuchsia cultivation notes.
